Aerobic Oxygen Water Treatment
Treating your water on a course is important, as free-flowing streams contain microbes which are unfamiliar to most people's bodies. For 100% microbe-free water, boiling is the best option, but for life on the trail, a good filtration system or water treatment system should be quick and convenient.

Aerobic Oxygen is a tasteless, odorless, colorless and instant water treatment. Ten to twelve drops per quart of water will, according to the manufacturer, instantly kill all anaerobic bacteria by super-saturating the water with an oxygen-rich environment. While the treatment is not 100% guaranteed, we have found a significant reduction in cases of Giardiasis since we began using AO in 1989. A single 2-ounce bottle will last a person approximately 6 weeks of daily use. Imported from Canada.

Frosts Tri-flex Laminated Knife with Plastic Sheath
When it comes to getting things done, nothing on a BOSS course is as important as a good knife. Frosts knives of Mora, Sweden has made incredible blades for over 300 years, always placing function over form. We appreciate the quality a Mora blade provides at a very affordable price. Few knives can compare.

This 4" Triflex laminated carbon steel model has three layers: a very hard center layer for the cutting edge (hardened to HRC 61) and a softer steel laminated on each side. The blade is extremely sharp and remains so, but is relatively elastic at the same time. This results in a tough blade this is easier to sharpen and has excellent tensile strength. A great knife for cutting, chopping, and slicing at BOSS.

NOTE: If you do not already have a wilderness knife, we STRONGLY encourage you to buy the Mora Triflex. For $14, you won't find a better blade.

Outdoor Survival Skills
by Larry Dean Olsen

Considered the "unofficial textbook of BOSS," a lot of the skills and plants in this book related directly to the environment of Southern Utah. This is an excellent, comprehensive book about primitive survival skills.

From the publisher: "This unique guide teaches how to survive in almost any outdoor environment with little or no purchased equipment, relying on what nature provides. Chapters on shelter, fire, water, plants, animals, and special skills explain how to: Build a lean-to; brush, pole, or grass thatch wickiup; wattlework shelter; snow cave; Make fire with flint, bow drill, hand drill, fire saw; make a fire carrier of bundle; Obtain drinking water from dew, water pockets, an evaporation still; Fashion tools, fish hooks, traps, bows, arrows, spears from stone, bone, and wood; Make rawhide, tan leather; weave bark and other plant fibers Harvest grasshoppers, ants, grubs; trap, hunt, and stalk larger game.

Readers soon grasp that survival depends not only on mastery of these skills but on small commonsense decisions about when and where to seek food and water, build shelter, or travel. In this new edition, anecdotes from the author's lifetime of experience provide thrilling examples of the skills and attitudes that ensure success and survival outdoors."

Primitive Technology: A Book of Earth Skills
Edited by David Wescott, Society of Primitive Technology

David Wescott, editor of the Bulletin of Primitive Technology and one-time owner of BOSS, has compiled two editions (so far) of Primitive Technology books from back issues the Bulletin. Both books are a welcome addition to any library of wilderness skills books.

From the Back Cover: "Living in modern society, we have become increasingly disassociated from the earth, from the essence of ourselves, and the need is awakened in us to return to the wilderness--physically and emotionally. We long to feel a sense of connection with our ancient roots. This urge is what has prompted man's fascination with primitive skills: producing objects from natural materials using methods similar to prehistoric cultures.

Primitive Technology: A Book of Earth Skills is a sharing of ideas — the philosophies, the history, and the personal stories by the authorities on primitive technology from the pages of The Bulletin of Primitive Technology. Included are instructions for creating fire and tools of wood, stone, and bone, as well as fiber adhesives, projectiles, art, and music. Practicing these primitive methods will lead the seeker towards a tangible, raw connection with the ancient past, with nature's resources and, ultimately, with the creative forces that constructed the foundation of man's survival on the planet."

From the Back Cover
"At long last Steve Watts has put together the book we've all been waiting for--Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills.
